The mattress world was changed forever when memory foam was first released to the public. The supportive contouring properties of the material made it an instant success which (for better or worse) buyers demanded.
There’s no denying that memory foam is a great material that was a quantum leap in mattress technology. However, it’s not without its faults. Many brands decided to stick with memory foam and focus their research and development resources on finding ways to solve some of the issues present in the material. While improvements have been made, the issues are still not solved.
However, one or two brands decided to go their own way to try and create an entirely new material that has all of the benefits of memory foam, without the downsides.
Purple is one of those brands.
Today we are going to take a look at the Purple mattress. We’re going to tell you what it is, why it’s good, and answer some of the most frequently asked questions we receive.
Let’s get started.
Key Components to Purple Mattresses
Like all good mattresses, the Purple mattress is made up of different layers of material. It’s a springless product and the bottom two layers are reasonably standard (we’ll mention them briefly later). But the top layer is where the magic happens.
Top Layer – Hyper-Elastic Polymer
To understand why this top Hyper-Elastic Polymer layer is so good, you need to understand the problems that are present in memory foam (which this material was engineered to outperform).
Memory foam is great for being supportive and contouring to your body’s shape. It’s a space-age material that until a few years ago nothing could realistically compete with. However, there were two problems with memory foam. The biggest one was heat retention, the second one was its interconnected nature.
Memory foam wasn’t made for mattresses (it was made by NASA for airplane seats). As such, heat retention wasn’t that big of a deal. However, when the material became commonplace in mattress design, the insulating properties of memory foam started to become an issue.
Many brands spent quite a bit of money developing different ways to make memory foam retain less heat. Some used open cell design patterns that improved airflow inside the foam and others used cooling gels to spread the heat out more evenly.
These valiant attempts have certainly made memory foam a cooler sleeping surface than it once was, but still, it’s considered one of the warmest things to sleep on.
The Hyper-Elastic Polymer that has been used in the Purple mattress doesn’t have this problem.
For a start, it’s an entirely different material, in a raw state this polymer retains much less heat than memory foam does. However, the honeycomb pocket style design pattern that makes this product so special (which we will mention in a second) allows for incredible airflow (making it one of the coolest night’s sleep on the market).
The second “issue” with memory foam is the way in which it contours to your body.
Now we will be honest here, memory foam is still pretty darn good at this compared to other materials. With perhaps the exception of latex, it’s in a different league to other materials that mattresses are commonly made from. However, there was certainly room for improvement.
Memory foam layers in mattresses are created as one large slab of foam. It’s a single piece that comes off of a huge roller and is then cut into mattress sized segments. On the other hand, the Hyper-Elastic Polymer in the Purple mattress is not a single piece (at least not in the same sense as memory foam).
The top layer of the Purple mattress has countless individual honeycomb style pockets that are filled with air. This design means that when pressure is applied directly to one pocket, the others around it don’t move at all.
It can be hard to visualize what this means, so let’s try a thought experiment.
Imagine resting a glass of red wine on the memory foam mattress you have at home now. Now imagine you push down on the mattress reasonably close to the base of the glass.
What would happen?
The mattress would compress in the general area where you pushed (including underneath the glass) and the red wine would spill.
If you repeated this process on the Purple mattress, the mattress underneath the glass wouldn’t move at all. It wouldn’t even wobble.
But what does this mean? Why is it good?
Because the Hyper-Elastic Polymer used to make the top layer of the Purple mattress can compress up to 15 times its resting size, it means that just like memory foam, it will contour to your bodies shape.
However, with memory foam, the mattress compresses around the area that has pressure applied to it (instead of only on the area where direct pressure is applied). This means that while it’s kind of contoured to your body, it’s not perfect.
With the Purple mattress, each individual honeycomb segment is going to compress in proportion to the pressure that is directly applied to it.
For example: If you’re a side sleeper, the Purple mattress will compress significantly under the weight of your hips. But when it reaches your waist it will be compressed much less (as the waist applies less pressure). What’s more, there won’t be a “ramp up” between your hips and waist. It’s an instant transition that provides impeccable support.
Remember those pin art toys from 10 years ago?
The ones that you put your hand on one side, and then the pins on the other side stuck out creating a 3d imprint of your hand with the metal pins?
This product is kind of like the mattress equivalent of that toy, just with fewer pins and more Hyper-Elastic Polymer.
2nd Layer – High Density Foam
As we mentioned earlier the second and third layers of this product are pretty uneventful compared to the top layer. The second layer is made of a reasonably thick wedge of ventilated high-density foam. It’s made from high-quality material, but you’d find that in any premium mattress.
3rd Layer – Higher Density Foam
Again, nothing special to see here. This is a thicker layer of a higher density foam than the 2nd layer. It doesn’t do much apart from providing a supportive base and adds a little thickness for luxury.
Purple Mattress Coupons
Purple used to provide their customers with coupon codes on a semi-regular basis. However, in recent years they have decided to stop that promotional method and we haven’t seen a valid code for some time now.
The closest thing they are offering to a promo at the moment is that they are throwing in a free seat cushion with each mattress you buy. It’s not great, but it’s better than nothing.
You don’t need a code to activate this offer, it’s currently included with every purchase by default.
How Much Does The Purple Mattress Cost?
The Purple mattress is a premium product with a premium price tag.
You get what you pay for with mattresses, and this product is no exception. Prices start from $699 for a Twin XL mattress and they range up to $12,999 for a California king-sized mattress.
Payment plans are available and range from $79 per month through to $117 per month.
Purple Mattress Review
As usual, we are going to break down this review section into several subsections that cover the most important features of any mattress.
We are not exaggerating in the slightest when we say that this is one of the most supportive mattresses on the planet. The combination of the Hyper-Elastic Polymer and the honeycomb pocket design allows the mattress to perfectly and accurately contour to your body. It’s what memory foam lies awake at night wishing it could be.
This is an exceptionally cool mattress. There are other materials that can provide a similar level of heat dissipation to Hyper-Elastic Polymer, but none of them are anywhere near as comfortable. Even in the warmest climates, the hottest sleepers will be kept as cool as a cucumber all night long.
The comfort levels this product provides are off the charts. Most people reading this will be familiar with how comfortable the contouring properties of memory foam can be. Imagine that amount of comfort, and then double it. That’ll get you about halfway to understanding how good it is to lie down on this mattress.
Honestly, it’s so good you won’t want to wake up.
There’s no avoiding the fact that this is an expensive mattress. At $700 for the smallest model and $1300 for the largest, it’s a significant investment.
However, we honestly think it’s worth every single cent.
Dollar for dollar it provides better performance than all other premium products in its price bracket. We know that this won’t be a product that’s within everyone’s budget, but the payment plan option can help if you’ve really got your heart set on it.
However, if this is within budget and you’re in the market for a premium mattress, you should put this product right at the top of your shortlist.

Commonly Asked Questions
Does Purple Mattresses Come with a Warranty?
Purple know that people are going to want some kind of a guarantee that they are going to be getting a quality product when they are spending between $700 and $1300 on a mattress. Due to this, they include a comprehensive warranty with each mattress they sell.
It’s a 10-year non-transferrable limited warranty. If you have any issues with your mattress at all within the first 10 years, simply give them a quick call and they will repair (or replace) your mattress free of charge.
They also have a 100-day refund policy which is worth mentioning in this section. If you’re not happy with the product for any reason you can simply call them up and request a refund, no questions asked. Anecdotally we have learned that this process is pain-free, and they even donate your old mattress to a local charity.
Is the Purple Mattress Firm or Soft?
It’s no coincidence that Purple has dressed up an actress as Goldilocks in their promotional videos. This mattress is not too soft, it’s not too hard – it’s just right.
Due to the unusual advanced design of the honeycomb structure that makes up the top layer of this mattress – it can’t be rated in terms of traditional firmness. It’s truly a game-changing design that flips the concept on its head.
Regardless of if you like a firm bed or a soft one, you’re going to love sleeping on this. It’s a one mattress suits all solution.
Note: We know this might sound hard to believe, but remember there’s a 100 day no questions asked refund policy. If this is your only sticking point stopping you from buying, we highly recommend you order it and see for yourself. If we’re wrong (we’re not), you can get your money back easily.
Does the Purple Mattress Sleep Cool or Hot?
As we mentioned earlier, this is an exceptionally cool mattress to sleep on.
The Hyper-Elastic Polymer that the top layer is made from is a terrible insulator (which makes it great for keeping you cool). Additionally, the huge amount of airflow that is generated by the honeycomb pocket design pattern provides levels of ventilation that other mattress manufacturers could only dream of.
How long does a Purple mattress last?
Purple mattresses aren’t especially long-lasting, but they aren’t unacceptably fragile either. They have a 10-year warranty but you can easily expect to get around 15 years of use out of them. 20 years of use would not be surprising to hear about.
Are Purple Mattresses Good for Side, Back or Stomach Sleepers?
Again, due to the complex design of the Hyper-Elastic Polymer layer, this mattress can’t really be recommended for one specific group of sleepers. The way it provides support is completely different to a traditional mattress (and is far superior).
Because of this, it’s suitable for everyone, regardless of how they sleep. Purple state on their website that it’s perfect for back sleepers and side sleepers (and even have amusing videos with goldilocks demonstrating the fact).
They’re unusually silent about stomach sleepers, however, and we’re unsure why. It’s possibly because stomach sleepers are in the minority, but regardless, we see no reason why this product would not be suitable for them.
We Recommend the Purple Mattress for People That:
Sleep With Someone Of A Different Weight – If your sleeping partner is much lighter or heavier than you, then you’re probably familiar with the sensation of rolling together and meeting in the middle of the mattress during the night. Because the Purple mattress doesn’t compress in areas without direct pressure, you’re both going to stay on your respective sides of the bed. A mouse could sleep next to an elephant on this product and they’d stay separate.
Get Hot During The Night – We’ve mentioned several times how good this product is at keeping the sleeper cool throughout the night – so we’re not going to repeat ourselves. If you get warm in your sleep or live in a hot area, this is a product that’s going to provide you with one of the coolest sleeping surfaces on the market.
Toss And Turn Throughout The Night – If you’re known to toss and turn throughout the night, then this product is really going to help you. The super supportive nature prevents your subconscious body from feeling like it needs to move around while you’re asleep. You’re still going to move a little (it’s required to prevent blood flow issues), but you’re probably going to be moving much less than you are now.
Suffer From Neck and back pain – The amazing design of the top layer of this mattress is a godsend for people who suffer from neck and back pain. The advanced contouring properties allow it to provide the perfect amount of support with pinpoint accuracy along the entire length and width of your body. We’re not exaggerating when we say this product has a very good chance of literally removing all of your morning joint pain.
So there you have it, a comprehensive impartial overview of the Purple mattress.
There’s no getting around the fact that this is one of the most expensive mattresses on the market right now. You’ll struggle to find many products that cost anywhere near as much as this one does.
However, if you’re in the market for a premium product, we highly recommend you strongly consider the Purple mattress.
In our opinion, it’s literally one of the best mattresses money can buy.
